Week 4: Solid Drawing, Anticipation, and Follow Through and Overlap

What we have learned Last Week:

Arcs
Full or half circular movements.

Slow In and Slow Out
Adding more frames of animation in the beginning and the end of a movement for more natural looking action.

Secondary Movement
Secondary movement is when extra movement is added to enhance the main animation making it look more natural.

What have we learned this week?

Solid Drawing
Making a drawing so that it looks 3-dimetional on a 2-dimetional surface.

Look at this turnaround of Homer Simpson. This is a solid drawing because Homer looks the same from all angles.

Take a look at these two drawings. Which one of the two do you think is a solid drawing?
(Left picture is a screen shot from 'Neko Sugar Girls', the right picture of the main characters from 'Sword Art Online')

Look at this Episode of Neko Sugar Girls. Do that characters look the same from all angles?

Look at this scene from Sword Art Online. Do the characters look the same from all angles?

Anticipation
This technique used when you are trying to prepare you character to do a major action. Her are some examples:

-Spreading your legs and wiggling your arms and fingers before lifting something really heavy.

-Getting a better grip on your baseball bat before you swing.

-Cracking you knuckles and raising you arms before playing the piano.

-Winding up before you pitch a baseball.

What do you think that Donald Duck is about to do here?

Follow Through and Overlap
When that main mass is in motion, (character, animal, object, etc...) and it has extra appendages, like hair, fur, loose clothing, winkles, etc, those extra appendages will move along with that mass. But when the mass comes to a stop, those appendages will still be in motion before they come to a complete stop. Remember, nothing in life stops all at once.

In this video, the main mass is my arm. The extra appendage is the shoe string wrapped around my arm. When I move my arm, the string moves along with it. But when I stop my arm, the string doesn't stop with my arm, Instead, the string drags behind and even swings a little more before coming to a complete stop.
