Cel Painting
Cel Painting was a process that was used in animated films between the years 1937 through 1989. The way that you would do this is by tracing a drawing on one side of a sheet of celluloid and then paint them on the other side. After the release of Disney's 'The Little Mermaid', cel animation was replaced with Computerized Animation Process System or CAPS.
With CAPS, you no longer had to ink and paint every individual cel. Instead, you could scan your drawings and then color them with an infinite pallet. This process has brought you favorites such as:
The Rescuers: Down Under
Lion King
Aladdin
Beauty and the Beast
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Lilo and Stitch
and many others up until Home on the Ranch in 2004.

Some
Handy Tips
-
As an artist, it’s always a good idea to have a sketchbook
within arm’s reach. You never know when inspiration will hit you!
-
Keep your eyes and mind open to new ideas. Then write or
draw them down.
-
If you draw long enough, your drawing hand will begin to
cramp up at one point. If that happens, STOP
DRAWING! Put the drawing tool down! Take a break! Rest your hand!
Soak it in warm water. Sleep if you have to. Yes, I know that drawing can be
fun, but there is no need in hurting yourself in order to do it.
-
Consider getting yourself a stress ball and a tube of Bengay
Pain Relieving Cream for your hand.
-
Keep a digital folder of all the things that you like so
that you can use it for reference later. It could be anything like your
favorite cartoons, plants, artwork, bugs, your favorite animals, fashion, food,
planets, celebrities, cities, Donald Trump, etc…
-
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.
-
Try new things.
-
Watch as many animated shorts and/or movies as you can. It’s
good to know what have been done before and what is out now.
-
If you start to sell your artwork, never cheat yourself. Know
your worth.
-
Study up on art history.
-
When you get old enough, start getting into the habit of
networking and putting yourself and your art out there. The Internet will be
your best friend. (Refer back to Good Places to Post Artwork)
-
Post your art as often as possible! The life span for an
artist is about 6 months.
-
Just draw and have fun! :)
Animation is a beautiful, amazing, and
often times weird art form. One minute you’re in Disney Land watching Beauty
and the Beast, the next minute you’re watching Dora the Explore and
Bubbleguppies, then suddenly you take one sharp turn and you find yourself in
the creepy side of town with the most trippy, crazy, and sometimes disturbing,
if not violent, presentations of the animator’s psyche *cough* The Separation *cough*,
and then you finish it all off with a some Fresh Guacamole. I
believe that you can do great things! Always do your best, work hard, and never
doubt yourself.
